What pay and benefits does the International Secretariat offer?

We offer competitive salaries, modern working environments and excellent staff benefits.
Read more about working at Amnesty International

Does the International Secretariat accept speculative CVs?

No. We ask that all candidates complete an application form so we can ensure you provide us with the information we need to make an accurate assessment of your skills and experience.

Can I get a work permit to work at the International Secretariat?

We are committed to equal opportunities and cultural diversity. Unfortunately our ability to obtain a work permit for potential employees is contingent upon the immigration requirements of the countries in which we operate.
We will indicate in the details of the post whether or not we believe we will be successful in gaining a permit.
If we do not believe we will be successful, you should only apply for the role if you already have the legal right to live and work in the country.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: VOLUNTARY AND INTERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

How often are the volunteering and internship opportunities advertised?

Vacancies are advertised on a very regular basis. Roles are usually advertised for two weeks.

I am not a British national - can I volunteer in the UK?

We actively encourage applications from all around the world. If shortlisted, we will arrange a telephone interview.
If successful, we will provide you with a sponsorship number so you can apply for a Tier 5 Temporary Worker visa to be granted the right to volunteer in the United Kingdom for up to 12 months.
For further details about the process in the country applicants are applying from and to download the application forms go to the visa services website (if applying from outside the United Kingdom).
Note that you will be responsible for all costs related to your visa application, including flights and living costs when you come to the UK.

How long will I need to commit for?

Volunteers and interns are free to leave at any time. However, we would appreciate it if you could commit to a minimum of three months for voluntary roles and for a minimum of three to six months for internship roles.

Can I complete a generic application for roles that do not exist?

Due to the high number of applications we receive, you can only apply for the roles that we advertise on the website. We neither consider generic application forms nor CVs.

Will I be contacted after I submit my application?

Applicants who submit an application to the volunteering mail box volunteering@amnesty.org will receive a confirmation by email.
Applicants who wish to receive confirmation about the receipt of their application when submitting either by post or fax will need to email us at volunteering@amnesty.org quoting the reference of the role they applied for.

Who should we accept as a referee when completing my application form?

We ask for the names and details of two referees who you have known for a minimum of six months either in a paid (employment) or unpaid capacity (ie training course, voluntary work, teachers, professors).

How long does it take before I am contacted for an interview?

You should consider your application as being unsuccessful if you do not hear from us within six weeks from the closing date. Only short-listed applicants will be contacted for an interview.

Payment and expenses

Volunteer and internship roles at the International Secretariat are unpaid. We will, however, cover up to £6.50 per day for travel expenses (subject to receipt) and £4.50 per day for lunch expenses on the days you volunteer in your team.

Will my flight expenses be covered?

This is not currently possible.

Accommodation in London

Amnesty International is unfortunately unable to assist you in finding accommodation.
You may wish to check www.loot.com or www.gumtree.com for information about flats and rooms to rent in London.

Can you keep my application form for other voluntary roles?

You will need to submit an application for every voluntary or internship roles you wish to be considered for.

If I want to undertake a training course (stage, practicum), can this be done through the voluntary programme?

Yes. You need to apply and if recruited for a role, we will be able to liaise with your school or university to confirm your acceptance as a volunteer/intern.

Can I volunteer if I have a disability?

Yes. Once recruited for a role, we will assess your needs and make reasonable adjustments around your disability to enable you to volunteer.

Can I volunteer if I'm under 16 years old?

There is no age restriction and you can apply for any role as long as you commit to the minimum required length.
However, there is no guarantee that volunteering will lead directly to employment within Amnesty International.

Can I volunteer whilst claiming Job Seekers Allowance?

If you are claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) you are fully entitled to volunteer for as many hours as you like, as long as you remain available for and are actively seeking work.

How much training do volunteers/interns receive from the organization?

Although we would expect that volunteers/interns have the required skills to conduct their voluntary duties, we will also allow them to participate in courses that are directly related to their work and will be provided by the organization. This will enable them improve their skills in order to perform their voluntary role well.

Will I be entitled to a reference letter after my stay as a volunteer/intern?

Volunteers and interns are issued with a reference letter which outlines the duties they were assigned and also includes details about their performance as part of the team/programme they have volunteered for.

Are there any social events organized in the International Secretariat for volunteers/interns?

In recognition of the time, support and energy given by our volunteers and interns, we organize a monthly event when we can all get together and celebrate the involvement of our 100+ volunteers/interns.
These events included lunches, dinners, trips to towns in the UK and other activities (eg ten-pin bowling, museum visits).

Can I be contracted for a paid job after my volunteering period?

We value very highly our volunteers and the contribution that they make to our organisation but we must make clear that volunteering at Amnesty International is not a guaranteed entry into paid work with our Organisation.
Having said this many of our current employees have previously volunteered for Amnesty International or similar organisations and it is an experience that will be of great value to you should you wish to start a career in this field.
All of our current employment vacancies are advertised on the website under Vacant Positions should you wish to apply at any time.

College Admission Procedures in New Zealand

international students must fulfill all the minimum eligibility conditions and other related New Zealand's admission requirements to get admission in any of the study programs there. Leaving for New Zealand for a full time study experience needs step-by-step planning and a student visa. The procedures should be started well in advance of the commencement of the program. Students must start the procedure by submitting the applications to the concerned university(s) at least two months before the study programs start. After that students are advised to search and identify the scholarships or financial aid schemes and begin the application process to get the financial support they desire to obtain.

Checking with the nearest Mentor Consultancy is advised for details as scholarship deadlines vary across institutions. Then, students should register for IELTS or TOEFL examination, which are the mandatory entrance tests to seek admission in New Zealand's universities and other Institutions. Students should apply for a student visa at the nearest New Zealand diplomatic mission, after being accepted by an institution for a study program in New Zealand. In order to apply for a student visa, overseas students generally need the following documents:
  • A valid passport.
  • Documents supporting past educational qualifications.
  • Letter of acceptance from the respective New Zealand University or other institution where the student is enrolled.
  • Evidence of IELTS or TOEFL score.
  • Evidence of adequate funds to cover tuition and living costs of students and their dependents (if any), including return transportation.
  • If applicable, a letter from the student's sponsor.
  • In some cases, a medical examination by a doctor designated by the New Zealand government may be needed. The immigration officer will provide information about this requirement.

Europe Wants You

Opportunities for Working in Europe are Expanding for Non-European Citizens

For non-European citizens, working in Europe has the reputation of being difficult. If you are not a European Union passport holder, goes the stereotype, local regulations shut you out of the market, so you shouldn’t even think about it.

That may have been true in the past, but not any more.

Many European governments have begun to change laws, and are beginning to encourage immigration for non-EU citizens with university degrees and skills that are in demand. There are several reasons, but the most commonly cited one is that Europe has long suffered from “brain drain.” In turn, this lack of experts and highly educated people is affecting economic growth and European governments want to change that.

Word has been slow in getting out, though. This may be because countries have been busy changing laws and engaging in internal debate without time for much else. The bottom line, though, is that the monolithic work permit is being replaced in many countries by a combination of residency permits with various levels of work permission and work permits with flexible conditions.

Having a basic idea of how the details work can help you to understand how governments in countries like the U.K., Belgium, France and Germany are trying to attract people, since they are all doing completely different things.

Sound like a conundrum? It’s not. We’ll look at a bit of theory and then some practical examples.

First, non-EU nationals do not have an automatic right to work (i.e. have permission to work) within the European Union. (European Union nationals do.) You can be given this right by local governments. The simplest, and most recognized form, is the work permit. It isn’t the only one, though. (Keep this in mind for later.)

Second, a residence visa/permit shows that you have the legal right to stay in a country. These permits are usually given for a certain purpose, such as being with your family, being with a partner/ spouse, studying, and so on. The permit can be issued with restrictions on it, for a limited or unlimited period of time, and may or may not carry work permission.

That may not sound like much, but in practice it can work for you.

Let’s say that you are studying in Italy. You will be there for a year, at a local university. Your residency permit will say, well, that you are a student who is in Italy legally for one year. While that doesn’t sound too glorious, your card also carries with it the right for you to work. So, all of the gloom and doom that you read about it taking a year or more to obtain a work permit for a job in Italy….. it doesn’t apply to you!

(Do note, though, that you have to comply with whatever conditions are in place in your locality. The right of work with a student permit in Italy is not unlimited, and your real purpose is to study, not work.)

Earlier in the article, I mentioned that European governments are trying to attract talented people from outside the EU. They’re doing this in a number of ways, but the most popular are eased work permits and Green Cards.

Eased work permits are a broad category but work very simply. If a company wants to hire you, they can. A government still issues a work permit, but suspends some of the requirements. For example, they do not require potential employers to prove that there is there is lack of suitable local candidates. Instead, the employer may simply have to show that your salary is above a certain level and that you are a talented/ highly-educated individual.

In other words, you can go work in a country under three conditions, namely that you have a job offer, acceptable university degree and a salary above a preset minimum. That’s it! Currently nine countries have some form of this permit, and another two are considering the idea.

Let’s look at a practical example.

Fred has an advanced degree from a state university in Georgia, and there is a company in Antwerp who would like to give him a job which has a salary of $50,000 per year. If all of the paperwork is OK, then these conditions may be enough for local authorities to issue all of the paperwork and Fred can be on the next plane to Brussels. Up the road in the Netherlands, though, Dutch authorities would say that this is not enough to qualify for their eased work permit, since they have different conditions.

Green Cards work differently. In fact, the name Green Card is a bit confusing since European countries, in fact, have no equivalent of the United States permanent residency permit. (The name comes from popular usage.)

European countries are instead using points-based immigration systems which resemble the ones used in Canada or Australia. In this process, an applicant is given points on the basis of criteria such as education, career sector and salary. Governments then set a minimum number of points for a successful application. If you score above that number and officials accept your proof, you can move!

One of the best features of the Green Card is that some countries allow you automatic and unlimited work permission. On the whole, programs fall into two basic categories- ones where you can apply yourself without a job, and ones where you need a job offer for the initial application. The U.K. has the oldest system, and another six countries have a program in place or considering doing so.

For more details on the U.K. program, see www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk. Another country which has a program is the Czech Republic, see their site at www.imigracecz.org for more information.

Again, a practical example helps clarify things.

Sally has a degree from a state university in Oregon, and pursued an MBA at the University of Virginia. She’s thinking about working in Europe, and finds the list of requirements for the United Kingdom. On the basis of her MBA and where she studied, she can qualify for a residency permit with working permission. She doesn’t even need a job beforehand! She does, though, need to fill out all of the paperwork correctly and get her visa before leaving for London. Sally may also need to show authorities that she has a job and is earning above a required minimum for authorities to issue her a renewal after two years. Still, no work permit required!

Keep in mind that the eased work permits depend on individual circumstances, whereas for the Green Cards you need to provide the right evidence to qualify. (Be sure that you use knowledgeable local legal help!)

Even with these legal hurdles, these changes represent a real change for talented and educated non-EU citizens who are already living and working in Europe or are thinking of making the move. Ten years ago, for example, work permits were thin on the ground for anyone not being transferred by a company… Not anymore.

Why a well written Resume is of Importance

Even though, many employers will provide you with an application form, where you fill in your details, the initial contact between a potential employer and a candidate is generally the résumé and your cover letter. Thus, even with an application form, the quality of presenting yourself to an employer is crucial in your job search. Remember, you have, maybe, 5 minutes to convince your counterpart to send you an application form. Because, when he looks at your résumé, he has to feel that you are "the person for the job". That is why having a top professionally written résumé is an important investment!
There are numerous good résumé writing services available to help you create the right format. You can find some of the ones we have tested at our Resume Writing and Advice Page. They are all good quality, but vary in price and you get what you pay for! Below are also some links to excellent resume writers

APPLYING FOR UK VISA

How to apply for your UK Visa

Step 1. Determine the kind of UK Visa or Permit, if any, for which you are eligible to apply. This is an important step and you can find information to help you with this question on the British Government’s official visa and work permit information sites.

Step 2. Once you know which visa you would like to apply for, you will need to contact your nearest British High Commission, Consulate or Embassy and ask to have the appropriate application forms sent to you, or you can often download these forms quickly and easily from their websites. You can also apply for some visas online. Decide whether you would like to use a visa representative to assist you with your application.

Step 3. Read through the forms carefully to ensure you qualify and to see what documents you will need to supply. Fill out the forms completely and return to the British High Commission or Consulate in your country with all of the information and supporting documentation they have requested. If you have questions about filling out the forms, you should contact the British High Commission or Consulate on the number provided on your UK visa application forms. When should I apply?

Step 4. You will have to visit your nearest UK visa application centre to have your biometric information recorded (10-digit finger scans and a digital photograph). Your visa application will not be processed until you have provided the necessary biometric information.

Step 5. Wait for written confirmation of your successful UK Visa application from the British High Commission or Consulate to which you applied. If there are any problems they will contact you.

Step 6. If you are planning to work in the UK and have not already created a UK file online with WORKgateways – you can do so now! Apply for jobs and to agencies to start your UK job search. Be sure to upload your resume and keep your file updated as your travel plans become clear. Have a great time in the UK! If you are just “thinking about going.

With regards the timing of your application, you should check with the the UK High Commission or Embassy in the country you are applying from, as they all have different processing times. However in general, don’t apply too early (ie a year ahead) for your UK Visa. See information for each visa on WORKgateways as to the recommended timelines for applying. Most UK Visa applications (Ancestry, Youth Mobility, Spouse visa etc) will be processed within six weeks in most Commonwealth countries, but that is not a guarantee. If you are applying for the Tier 1 Highly Skilled Visa, this may take much longer and you should give yourself several months. It is not normally recommended to purchase your airline tickets until you have received your UK visa if this is something that will effect whether you go to the UK or not.

This information should be used as a guideline only. For official information on work visa and permit processing times please contact your nearest British Embassy or Consulate.

Overseas Nursing Opportunities

There are lots of overseas nursing opportunities which can help advance your career, participate in a variety of clinical experiences, and you can generally make more money than you would in the US. Because many countries are experiencing an acute shortage of experienced nurses, this is a good time to expand your horizons. When searching for nursing jobs overseas, you will need to provide proof that you have a suitable equivalent level of education and training and you are registered at home. Some countries also will require you to take an exam.Working in Ireland or the United Kingdom might appeal to you, since one thing you won’t have to worry about is the language barrier. There are agency’s which can match you with both permanent and temporary jobs.Like the United States, there is a shortage of nurses in the United Kingdom, and this agency will help you streamline the various requirements necessary to work there. The most prominent is registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, a requirement of all nurses in the UK that nurses from abroad also must acquire before a work permit can be issued. A recent search at a nursing employment agency found 42 international nursing jobs in countries that included Australia, Switzerland, and several in the United Arab Emirates. For work at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in the capital city of Abu Dhabi-which is 5 miles wide and 9 miles long-nurses who come from overseas are offered a tax-free salary, health insurance, free flights home and back and an annual 40-day leave, and a housing and utilities allowance. The rub is you will need to learn Arabic to communicate with patients and staff.
